Underwater Treadmill Therapy

What is Underwater Treadmill Therapy?

Who doesn't love a refreshing dip in the water? With this therapy, a treadmill is encased. Water can then fill the chamber from the bottom upward. The water level can be controlled as well as the speed of the treadmill.

Why is Underwater Treadmill Therapy beneficial?

At higher levels, the buoyancy of the water supports the weight of pets so they can use painful limbs or uncoordinated limbs with less pain and effort to gently regain strength and improve weight bearing. The water temperature is warm promoting increased muscle flexibility and relaxation. At lower levels, the water creates resistance for strengthening muscles in the final stages of recovery. This is also a great low impact exercise for pets who need to lose weight or improve stamina.

What conditions can be treated with Underwater Treadmill Therapy?

Underwater therapy is helpful for many different conditions. Arthritis, post-surgical recovery, neurological problems and muscle/tendon injuries. As stated below, Underwater Treadmill Therapy is also a great way to help patients lose weight.

We have a pool, is Underwater Treadmill Therapy different from my pet swimming at home?

Underwater Treadmill Therapy allows for a much more low-impact and controlled exercise. There is less chance of injury because jumping in and out of the water is eliminated. The water temperature and depth as well as the speed of the belt are all set for your pet’s needs.

My pet is healthy. Can Underwater Treadmill Therapy still be used?

Yes! Underwater Treadmill Therapy is a great tool to maintain muscle strength and improve stamina.

My dog does not like water or swimming, will they like Underwater Treadmill Therapy?

Because we can fill the tank gradually, some dogs who do not like swimming are able to adjust to this therapy. It is very important to us at VOMC that your pet not be stressed or scared during their visit. If your pet does not like water, we will likely recommend only Therapeutic Exercise sessions which are an effective way to help your pet.
